Cycling has quickly become a new passion. Although I have been riding bikes since I was a wee lad, I didn’t take it too seriously. I recently purchased an Opus Spark, which is a proper cycle-cross bike, so that I could start riding to work. This was the beginning of a new speed addiction.

The ride to work is only 17 km, but its full of hills and yields a great workout twice a day. I am constantly trying to best my time. Naturally I want to do better, and thus I turn to the pro circuit to see what they can do.

The Ironman pro’s start the swim

I woke up ridiculously early one day in July, so I could go and watch the start of an IRONMAN race. It was an inspiring morning and motivated me to train harder so that I can some day compete in the event.

This particular Ironman is a 70.3 version. Actual distances : Swim – 1.9km (1.2 miles), Bike – 94km (58miles), and then Run – 21.1 km (13.1 miles).

Training for this event will be long and hard, but I am up for the challenge. My biggest problem is going to be the swim. I need to really focus on getting some pool time in so I can develop a better technique. Right now I’m not even sure if I could make the 1.9 Km without drowning.

Cycling is not a problem. My longest ride so far is just over 100 km and by race day should have way more miles on my legs.

Running will require an increase in the training. At the moment I am only running in 10 km segments. More than double the distance could be a real workout.

Of course the real trick is to combine all three elements into one grueling day! So I plan to take it slow and work my way up.

Training Goals :

  1. Compete in a Duathlon 2012…Completed
  2. Start Swim Training…Complete – 1:53/100 meters average
  3. Compete in sprint Triathlons – None entered yet.
  4. Compete in a half Ironman 70.3 – Completed in 5:27:13.
  5. Compete in a Full Ironman after that.
